How can one tell the difference between food poisoning and a stomach virus?

Question by EA121: How can one tell the difference between food poisoning and a stomach virus?
My husband ate some chicken that I did not eat. Later on he said that when he bit into a piece of chicken that it didn't taste right maybe it was undercooked. 6 hours later he threw up 6 times and had diarrhea. He couldn't keep down water and had a headache so I took him to the er for iv treatments. The doctor said he had food poisoning. But most drs say you cannot tell the difference. I'm assuming he diagnosed this based on his symptoms and the story but can this be told in the bloodwork he had done? We have both had stomach viruses before but from those experiences we know that you don't really throw up that much with a virus...we hope. The only thing that has be questioning if it is definitely food poisoning is that he teaches and kids carry everything.

Best answer:
It is really difficult to tell, but I think the Doctor would be able to tell by asking your husband a few questions.
Your husband's remarks regarding the chicken would point to the fact that it's quite possible that it is food poisoning.
Having a tummy bug can affect people differently, some people don't throw up at all and just have a runny tummy for a day or so, while others can't hold anything down for up to two days.

I hope he feels better soon though, he must be feeling quite miserable :(
Stomach Cancer - Prevention And Treatment

Stomach cancer results from the growth of malignant cells in the lining of the stomach. More than 90percent of stomach cancers are adenocarcinomas, arising from cells lining the stomach wall; lymphomas account for 3 to 7 percent of stomach cancers. For unknown reasons, the incidence of stomach cancer has decreased dramatically in the United States in the last 50 years; dietary factors and the refrigeration of foods (which has decreased the need for chemical preservatives) are thought to play roles in the decline. Adenocarcinomas often cause symptoms only after growing too large to be completely removed surgically; hence, early detection greatly increases the chances that treatment may be initiated in time.

Prevention

Limit intake of salty, pickled, and smoked foods and increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. Have regular checkups, especially a test for blood in the stool, to aid in the early detection and treatment.

The Treatment

Surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible is the primary treatment. Part or all of the stomach, nearby lymph nodes, the pancreas, and the spleen may also be removed if it is suspected that cancer may have spread to these sites. Radiation therapy may be administered instead of or in addition to relieve pain and bleeding. Survival rates for lymphomas of the stomach are improved with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. In MALT, treatment with certain antibiotics and stomach acid inhibitors (such as omeprazole) can result in complete tumor regression.

One of the most effective alternative therapy recommended in the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer is the hyperbaric oxygen therapy or the ingested oxygen therapy. We will examine the latter since this one can be administered at home. It is widely known as “The one minute cure for all diseases” we all know that this prevention and treatment has gain publicity and prominence to a lot of people. Studies showed that if you deprive a cell 35 to 40% of its required levels of oxygen for 2-3days, the cell will become malignant and cancerous and will be prone to different kinds of diseases. Most people don't know that lack of oxygen is not only the cause of cancer but is also the cause of all most diseases. When the body is supplied and delivered with abundant and enough amounts of oxygen, no microbes, viruses, harmful bacteria, toxins, pathogens and disease microorganisms can survive because they cannot survive in a highly oxygenated environment in our bodies.
